Midland ESports 2018-2019 Preview

Welcome Warriors! The 2018-2019 collegiate eSports season is upon us. Midland University brought in Nathan Ragsdell, an experience eSports coach and grandmaster Overwatch League Player, to lead their eSports teams this season. At this time the eSports program will compete in three separate games, Overwatch, Hearthstone, and League of Legends. The current roster for the Midland eSports team is located here.


Overwatch is a team-based, multiplayer, first-person shooter video game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. Last season was Midland’s first foray into the Overwatch League. They are coming off of a 3-12 season.

They will be competing in the Tespa Overwatch Collegiate Championship. The format includes an initial pre-season phase where they will play two games a week against similarly skilled teams. The pre-season lasts from September 23, 2018 until December 9, 2018. The final standings of the pre-season will be used to seed the main Overwatch Collegiate Championship that occurs in the Spring of 2019.


Hearthstone is a free-to-play online collectible card video game published by Blizzard Entertainment. Last season Midland competed in their second year in Hearthstone. They are coming off of a 4-10 season.

They will be competing in the Tespa Hearthstone Collegiate Fall Championship. The Hearthstone team will consist of three players and start with a Regional Regular Season. Teams will play other teams in the region and any team with a 5-2 record will qualify for the Regional Playoffs.

The Regional Playoffs begin with a Swiss Phase. During the Swiss Phase, teams will play all other teams in their division and winners advance to the Dual Elimination  Regional Playoff. The Top 8 teams from the Regional Playoff then face off in the final Championship Dual Elimination Bracket.

Regular season games start for North region on October 2, 2018.

League of Legends

League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena video game published by Riot Games. Last season Midlands University participated in the AVGL College eSports League of Legends tournament. They coming off a 3-2 season.

The team will be competing in the 2018-2019 AVGL College eSPorts League of Legends tournament. The league will be structured with two online group stages. The top performers in the group stages will participate in a tournament and the top two teams will play the championship match on LAN.

The dates for the season have yet to be released.
